Kat's Facial Cream for Super Duper Dry Winter Skin

Katrin Mooney

I get the driest of dry skins in the winter. The cold and the wind don't treat my face well. Add a fireplace to the mix and you're in for a treat. :-)

So I tinkered around with about a bazillion different oils and butters until I finally came up with the ultimate recipe for soft, smooth, glowing and supple skin. No more dry and patchy skin. Since some of my friends & family members suffer from the same New England winter skin, here's my famous recipe for you guys to try at home. As a former European, I'm using the metric system since grams are so much more precise than ounces (that and I suck at fractions).

50 grams Beef tallow (you can use Shea Butter for a vegan-friendly version), 10 grams each of Ucuumba Butter, Tucuma Butter and Chaulmoogra, 5 grams each of Andiroba, Black Cumin Seed Oil, Perilla Seed Oil, Pumpkin Seed Oil, Meadowfoam Oil, Kukunuit Oil, Sea Buckthorn Oil and Flax Seed Oil. I added a couple of drops of orange, clary sage and frankincense essential oils (under 1% of the oil weight).

Now that I typed this up, I am realizing that these aren't necessarily oils & butters that anybody but a crazed DIY'er who turned their hobby into a business could possibly have sitting around in their pantry. So I guess over the next couple of weeks I'll test a couple of simpler recipes and report back.

In my defense, I whipped up a batch some two winters ago and the jar is still half full (I'm a half-full type of person anyways!) so this really goes a long way.

Donating for a good cause

Katrin Mooney

One of my friends on Facebook posted a meme last week. That meme read "Pray for the Homeless this winter."

My thoughts were: Praying is fine but what are we actually going to DO to help the homeless and how can we do it locally? I went online and found COTS and loved their mission statement: "We believe: in the value and dignity of every human life; that housing is a fundamental human right; and that emergency shelter is not the solution to homelessness." Boom. There we had it. The organization we wanted to support.

Now how to help and what to do? Then we had it: soap. Everybody needs soap. About every 15 seconds, a child dies from a disease that could have been prevented with proper hygiene. Scary to think that one little bar of soap could have saved a life. Or helped somebody get ready for an interview or simply just take a shower with a bit of a luxury soap.

So going forward, we're going to donate 100 soaps each quarter and hope to make a bit of a difference. One bar of soap at a time.

Happy Holidays from all of us at Vermont Cowgirl!

Back from vacation and right into foliage season

Katrin Mooney

Foliage season is probably my favorite season of the year. Warm afternoons, the smell of foliage, long hikes with the dogs, hot apple cider and ... color. Beautiful fall foliage color.

We did, however, also jump back into business and created a couple of awesome fall themed soaps. We made a pumpkin soap with organic pumpkin and even tried our hands on a Kombucha soap with an actual SCOBY. Next thing for us is to see if we can incorporate these leaves into a soap and also finalize the fall/winter lineup with some amazing new additions.

We'll be updating the shop shortly so in the meantime, enjoy some beautiful colors.

On Vacation!!!!

Katrin Mooney

Vermont Cowgirl will turn into Nevada/Utah Cowgirl for a week as we're taking a well deserved vacation and travel/hike/photograph our way through the Southwest. We'll be offline between Sept. 25th and Oct. 2nd and all orders received during this time will ship promptly the week of Oct. 3rd.

See you in a bit!

A heavy duty, all natural degreaser

Katrin Mooney

I'm not particularly proud of this next photo. :-( My husband (aka Vermont Cowboy) gave me this beautiful purple tea kettle for Christmas a couple of years ago and it sees a lot of action on the stove. The only action it doesn't usually see a lot is cleaning action. I looked at it and envisioned my grandmom slapping me in the back of the head "Gibbs Style".

I tried my trusted all purpose kitchen cleaner but the grease just chuckled and held firm. Next up was my magic eraser. The grease now laughed heartily and continued to hold firm. Nothing seemed to work. I was already off to Amazon to search for a "heavy duty grease remover" and came across an industrial cleaner that looked promising. It also came with a biohazard warning label. Back to the pantry I went. After much rummaging, I finally came across a box of Washing Soda that I use to make our DIY homemade laundry detergent.

Eureka! I'd struck gold. After pouring liberal amounts of washing soda over the tea kettle and used plenty of ellbow grease with very little water, the grease no longer held firm and slid down the drain with one last howl of defeat. Win for Team Washing Soda! Booyah and Bazinga!

I never thought Washing Soda would be this good of a de-greaser. The best part, it consists of 100% sodium bicarbonate. Meaning it's all natural, non-toxic and EPA considers sodium bicarbonate to have a minimal environmental impact. Win. Win. Win. Now I can feel awesome about the Purple Tea Maker being back to its original glory. Can't wait to give our stainless steel range hood a go next!

Happy Cleaning!

One more custom lip balm that's also a business card

Katrin Mooney

Custom made for our "big sister" company and photographers, Kingdom Wedding Photography by Kat. From Kat herself: "Clients love these! We gift custom lip balms to our engaged couples and also gift these as Christmas gifts to the fabulous vendors we work with throughout the year (i.e. for our favorite florist, we use the image of one of their bouquets on their lip balm).

We also use them as business cards on a day-to-day basis. We use different photos, add our website and unlike a "regular" business card, these don't get tossed. People always take a second peek when we had them our "business card" and they've been a great source of referrals - one memorable instance was a bridal show that we didn't have the funds to attend at the time. Instead, we sent along a couple hundred of our custom lip balms and ended up booking two weddings as a result! Love, love, love these lip balms!"

More fabulous custom lip balm designs

I have to say a word about our amazing vet - Nate over at Qi Veterinary Clinic in Burlington. Despite living 69 miles away, we happily make the trek for over 9 years now. Practicing Western as well as Eastern Medicine, Nate has an incredibly open mind and always does what's right for the individual animal. We love him & his staff to pieces and wouldn't go anywhere else in the world!

 Isn't their logo super adorable?

Meet our lip balm/business card!

Katrin Mooney

Our lip balms are first and foremost moisturizing and chock full of skin loving butters & oils. They also make fabulous business cards that people will keep at hand.

Here at Vermont Cowgirl, we're also all about supporting local businesses. After years of doing our own taxes, I finally reached my breaking point and started looking for an accountant. But not just any accountant. I wanted somebody we could not only trust 100% but also jive with. One local accountant had me almost out of her office because it looked more chaotic than ours (and that's saying a lot!). We dismissed bland websites with bland bios until we finally struck gold: Enter Montgomery & Merrill!

From the first meeting they've been nothing but awesome and worth their weight in gold. Or diamonds. Or chocolate lip balms. They answer their own phones so you aways speak with *your" person, they're super professional and so incredibly patient. A huge deciding factor were also the facts that they're huge on social issues, support a bundle of amazing causes, volunteer their time and ... love dogs. Done deal. Love them to pieces.

So as a small token of our appreciation, we created these custom lip balm labels for them with the lip balm label showing their logo.

We've since created many, many more custom lip balm labels for other local businesses and we absolutely love creating something special for our friends, family & customers.

Hope you have a great start into the week!

Rough & Tumble - our Sea Salt Spa Soap Bars

Katrin Mooney

Our lovely handmade and all natural sea salt soap bars don't start out as smooth as the one shown here. Nor do they reveal their intricate design right away. To get your sea salt soap bar to the same smoothness level as my favorite Green Mountain Mojito Sea Salt Bar (with Lime & Spearmint essential oils), it's best if you wash your hands with it a couple of times before using it on your body or face.

Smooth Salt Bar after a couple of uses

Smooth Salt Bar after a couple of uses

Our sea salt bars are poured into a large slab mold and cure to a rock hard bar super overnight. Beveling is next to impossible so they start off a bit rough around the edges. Literally. :-)

The first time I used one of these "fresh" bars in the shower (in my giddy excitement to give one of the newly made bars a test run), I was reminded very quickly that you definitely do want to pre-wash them a couple of times to get a super smooth and slightly exfoliating salt bar.

Even with my driest of dry skins, I use this daily as a facial bar and I'm super happy with my clear skin. Happy Suds!

Election Day!

Katrin Mooney

As a naturalized citizen, I'm always excited to vote so last night, I sat down with my little last of candidates that I was on the fence about, researched them and made my selection. Today, I'm going to take that little list to our little town hall and cast my vote. Doesn't matter if we agree or disagree on a certain topic but the important part is this - Get out and vote. It's an incredible opportunity to shape our democracy.

Trademark registration filed

Katrin Mooney

Phew. After watching videos on the US Government's Patents and Trademarks website for what felt like hours, I just completed our trademark application. While our business registration here in the State of Vermont protects our name here locally, we wanted to protect our name & brand in all 50 states since we have big plans for this little business.

So now we're just going to wait and see if I screwed up somewhere of if it's going to be smooth sailing. Fingers crossed!!!!

Say "hello" to our skin loving Activated Charcoal Sea Salt Soap Spa Bar!

Katrin Mooney

Our Sea Salt Soaps have been flying out the door over the last couple of days and we couldn't be any more excited if we tried. They're awesome soaps!

A crowd pleaser with kids and grown-ups alike. This "Lump of Coal" is an Activated Charcoal Sea Salt Soap that just draws impurities from the skin. Rich in minerals from Mediterranean Sea Salts & Himalayan Salts and superfatted with only the most skin loving oils. This salt soap will leave you invigorated, refreshed and in love with your smooth and glowing skin.

As per FDA guidelines, we can’t make any medical claims so we won’t tell you that this spa bar will not just cleanse but also revitalize dry skin or clear acne while moisturizing your skin. It also won't hand you a gently pre-warmed towel the moment you step out of the shower.

What we can tell you, however, is that our sea salt spa bar will clean your skin without drying it out. As all of our other Vermont Cowgirl soaps, it is handcrafted from scratch using our own recipes, right here in the heart of Vermont without any artificial flavors or fragrances – simply plain good ingredients; certified organic whenever possible.

Some folks believe sea salt bars to be drying and abrasive but they’re far from it. They start out rough and tumble but after the first couple of uses, it will turn into a smooth and polished rock. Think of it more of a “skin polisher” than an exfoliating bar – it’s just that smooth.

Ingredients: Organic Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil, Olea Europaea (Olive) Fruit Oil, Carbon (activated charcoal), Sodium Sodium Chloride (Hawaiian Black Sea Salt & Sonoma) Aqua, Sodium Hydroxide*, Citrus Aurantium Dulcis (Orange) Peel Oil, Pimpinella Anisum (Anise) Seed Extract.
